The City of Newburgh in Orange County was designated as the “worst city to live” In New York in the newly released report.
The report found that Newburgh, with a population of 28,444, with a median home value of $170,900, less than the state’s median value of $293,000. Its poverty rate of 31.2 percent is double the state’s average and there have been 1,236 violent crimes per 100,000 people, a sizable increase from the state average of 357.
According to the report, Newburgh ranks as the worst city to live in New York State, largely because of its high violent crime rate and widespread financial hardship. It noted that “like many cities on the list, Newburgh is shrinking,” with the population decreasing by 1.5 percent over the past five years.
